Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing a retreat naturally brings questions. We hope these answers offer a little clarity. If not, we’d be happy to talk.

How do I know if Roots is right for me?

Only you can answer that, but you don’t have to answer it alone. Roots is for people seeking time away from everyday life. Some arrive at a turning point, while others simply feel drawn to spend time in nature, reflection, and traditional Indigenous practices. If you’re unsure, we’d be happy to arrange a conversation before you make any decisions.

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely. You don’t need to arrive knowing anyone else. Our small groups naturally create opportunities for genuine connection, while always respecting each person’s space.

Do I need previous experience with plant medicines?

No. No previous experience is expected—only an openness to the journey ahead.

Is participation in every activity expected?

No. Everything we offer is an invitation, never an obligation. Your journey is your own, and there is no expectation to take part in every practice or activity.

Will I have time to myself?

Yes. Alongside the shared experiences, there is space to rest, reflect, journal, walk in nature, or simply be. Often, the quiet moments can become just as meaningful as the ceremonies and workshops themselves.

How do you help keep guests safe?

Every guest completes a confidential health questionnaire before attending. This helps us understand whether Roots is the right fit for you. Careful preparation, experienced support, and clear plans for the unexpected are all part of how the week is held. If we feel another path would better support you, we’ll always say so openly and respectfully.

What traditional medicines are used?

Depending on the retreat, traditional Indigenous plant medicines may form part of the week. They are always shared respectfully within their traditional context by our Indigenous partners.

Can dietary requirements be accommodated?

In many cases, yes. We’ll ask about dietary requirements as part of your health questionnaire before you arrive. If you have allergies, intolerances, or specific dietary needs, we’ll always be honest about what we can accommodate.

How many guests attend each retreat?

We intentionally welcome around ten guests. Small groups allow us to know each guest personally and create space for a quieter, more connected experience.

Where do the retreats take place?

Roots offers two locations in Colombia. One is surrounded by rainforest, and the other sits among the mountains. Both share the same philosophy and values, while each offers its own atmosphere and rhythm.

Is it safe to travel to Colombia?

Like any country, Colombia is a place best explored with local knowledge and sensible precautions. We’ll provide clear guidance before you travel, arrange your transfers, and support you from the moment you arrive. The warmth of the people and the beauty and diversity of Colombia are an important part of the wider journey.

How do I get to Roots?

Getting here is simpler than many people expect. You’ll arrange your flight to Colombia, and we’ll provide everything you need before you travel, including arrival details and transfer arrangements. From the moment we collect you, we’ll take care of the rest.

Will I notice the altitude?

Our mountain retreat sits at around 2,100 metres (6,900 ft) above sea level, while our jungle retreat is much lower, at around 600–700 metres (2,000–2,300 ft). Most people settle in comfortably. The week begins at a gentle pace, with plenty of time to rest, hydrate, and find your rhythm. If you have any particular concerns about altitude, let us know before you travel and we’ll be happy to talk them through with you.

Will mosquitoes be a problem?

For most guests, they shouldn’t be. Our local partners tell us that mosquitoes are rarely an issue at either retreat location. As with any natural environment, occasional insects are always possible. Conditions may be different if you choose to explore other regions of Colombia.

Is the drinking water safe?

Yes. We’ll provide safe drinking water throughout your time with Roots, so there’s no need to worry about bringing bottled water for the retreat itself. If you travel elsewhere in Colombia, local conditions may differ.

Will I have phone signal or Wi-Fi?

There is no Wi-Fi at our retreat locations, and phone signal may be limited. Portable Starlink will be available when guests need to connect. Before you arrive, we’ll also talk with you about any personal circumstances that may require you to stay in contact and agree the best way to support this during your stay. For some, being less connected becomes a welcome part of the experience. For others, knowing they can reach home when it matters makes it easier to be present while they’re here.

Will I need any vaccinations?

Requirements and recommendations can vary depending on where you’re travelling from and your wider travel plans. We’ll include relevant travel information in your preparation bundle, and we encourage you to check current guidance with your doctor or local travel health clinic before travelling.

What should I pack?

We’ll send you a suggested packing list well before you travel. Your Field Guide includes everything you need to prepare with confidence.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. You’ll need to arrange suitable personal travel insurance before travelling to Colombia.

Can I spend more time in Colombia?

Of course. You may choose to arrive a little earlier or stay a little longer to explore more of Colombia. We’re always happy to share suggestions to help you plan your wider journey.

What is included?

From the moment we collect you, everything is taken care of. Your retreat includes airport transfers, two nights in a boutique guest house before and after the retreat, accommodation, nourishing meals, workshops, daily practices, ceremonies, traditional plant medicines offered as part of the retreat, and everything that forms part of your week with Roots. The only things you’ll arrange are your flights to Colombia and your personal travel insurance. There are no compulsory extras or hidden costs. Our hope is that, for one week, money becomes something you hardly think about—leaving more space to be present with yourself, the people around you, and the experience as it unfolds.

Will I need local currency?

Not for your time with Roots. Everything that forms part of your retreat is already included. You may wish to bring a small amount of local currency or a bank card if you’d like to buy a gift, a souvenir, or a few personal items while travelling. If you do, we hope it’s because you found something you’d love to take home—not because you needed it for your retreat.

How do you approach the cost of a Roots retreat?

Roots is neither designed to be the least expensive retreat nor defined by luxury. Instead, we invest in the parts of the experience that matter most: small groups, thoughtful preparation, nourishing food, meaningful time in nature, and respectful, reciprocal relationships with our Indigenous partners. By welcoming around ten guests, we can offer greater presence, personal care, and space for each person’s experience to unfold in its own way. For us, quality is not measured by excess. It is found in the depth of the experience, the integrity of how it is held, and the care given to every guest, every member of our team, and every partnership that makes Roots possible.

What happens after I book?

Once your place is confirmed, we’ll send you everything you need to prepare, including your Field Guide and confidential health questionnaire. From that point onwards, we’ll stay in touch, answer your questions, and support you as your journey towards Colombia begins.

I still have a question.

We’re always happy to hear from you. If there’s something we haven’t answered here, please get in touch. We’ll answer your questions honestly and help you decide whether Roots feels right for you.
